Foreign teachers and students who come to Spain to do research or study must apply for the corresponding permit that regulates their residence in the country. The basic documentation that must be processed upon arrival in Spain varies depending on your nationality.

Extension of stay for study or research purposes
The applicant must attach originals of all documents submitted, which will be returned once the copies have been checked.
Documentation required:
- Application form for extension of stay in Official model: Ex 00, original and copy.
- Full passport or valid diploma.
- Documentation accrediting that you have passed the relevant tests or requirements for the continuation of your studies or, where appropriate, research.
- Documentation accrediting that you have sufficient financial means for the period of your stay in Spain.
- Documentation accrediting that you have medical insurance that covers, for the duration of your stay in Spain, medical expenses, and repatriation in the event of an accident or sudden illness.
- Certificate of census registration (at the end of the stay it is essential to cancel your registration) or a direct debit receipt.
- In the case of minors, authorisation from parents or guardians.
Deadline for submission of documentation: 2 months before the expiry date of the visa.
The extension is granted for a period of one year.
Citizens of the European Union
Certificate of registration as an EU resident
Foreign teachers and students who are nationals of a country of the European Union and of the signatory states of the Agreement on the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland), who hold a valid national identity card or passport and who are going to reside in Spain for more than three months, must apply for the corresponding certificate of registration as a EU resident. This process is associated with the assignment of a foreigner's identity number (NIE). If the student or teacher already has a NIE, they do not need to register as an EU resident, but they do need to report any change of address, if such a change has occurred since their last stay.

- Application form for certificate of registration as a EU resident, on official form Ex 18 (original and copy).
- Valid and valid passport or identity card. If it has expired, a copy of it and a copy of the renewal application.
- Documentation accrediting payment of the fees for issuing the certificate.
- Certificate of census registration (when the stay ends, it is essential to cancel the registration) or a direct debit receipt.
Citizens from non-EU countries
Visitors from non-European Union countries
Non-naturalised foreign teachers and students from EU member states, including the United Kingdom, whose stay in Spain is longer than three months, must provide the following documents:
Foreigner's identity card.

- Application form for extension of stay in Official model: Ex 15, original and copy.
- Full passport or valid passport with the entry stamp or control mark made at the border post.
- Visa, if applicable.
- Documentation accrediting that you are undertaking studies or, where applicable, research at the University.
- Proof of payment of the fees for issuing the certificate.
- Certificate of census registration (at the end of the stay it is essential to cancel your registration) or a direct debit receipt.
- Medical insurance.
In the case of stays of less than three months, if you are covered by the visa that is compulsory before your arrival in Oviedo, it would not be necessary to carry out any formalities.
Application for a foreigner's identity number
Any teacher or student not included in the previous sections, i.e. who stays in Spain for less than three months and who for other reasons needs to apply for the corresponding foreigner's identification number (sometimes required to open a current account in a bank) can also apply for it at the Spanish consular office corresponding to their area of residence.

- NIE application form for stay in Official model: Ex 15, original and copy.
- Full passport or valid title.
- Documentation accrediting that the interested party is not in Spain in an irregular situation (proof that he/she has not been here for a long time, e.g. date and stamp of entry into Spain, etc.): E.g. date and stamp of entry into Spain on the passport).
- Documentation justifying the reasons for the application.
- Certificate of census registration (when the stay comes to an end, it is essential to deregister) or a direct debit receipt.
