The research on leukaemia genome led by Carlos López-Otín and Elías Campo has been selected as Spain's most important scientific work since 2011 within the framework of the "Vanguardia de la Ciencia" prize.

Campos and Lopez-Otín's results have been voted on first by the readers of La Vanguardia and then by the scientific advisory committee of the prize. These results make doctors and scientists change their mind as regards leukaemia and open a new path for the improvement of treatments for blood cancer.

The articles uploaded on the website of the prize have received more than 130,000 visits, a figure which doubles the 58,000 visits during the first edition and which confirms that the initiative is being well received by readers. The main goal of the prize is to give visibility to the excellence research carried out in Spain. It is a joint inititative developed by the Godó Group and the Obra Social of Catalunya Caixa.

The readers and the advisory committee have put physicists Morgan Mitchell and Mario Napolitano in second place. They have beaten the Heisenberf limit, an apparently unbeatable limit in Physics. In third position was the ecologist Jordi Bascompte, who has proved that natural and economic ecosystems have something in common and on which their stablity depend- a result which could help improve the economic situation and protect the ecosystems-.
