In his investiture speech at the Auditorium, he demanded the regional governmemt an agreement with the University which should guarantee financial and legal stability and he defended the promotion of sponsorship.
The University of Oviedo has held this morning the investiture session of Vicente Gotor as Rector. It is his second term of office leading the management of the University of Oviedo. Almost a hundred doctors attired with their gowns, as well as politicians headed by the President of the Principality of Asturias, Francisco Álvarez-Cascos, and representatives from other social strata attended the ceremony, which took place at the Auditorium.
Vicente Gotor reminded in his investiture speech some of the most outstanding achievements during these four years and mentioned some of the proposals for the future. The Rector pointed out that the Campus of International Excellence continues being the strategic plan of the academic institution and defended the policies for promoting postgraduate studies, bilingualism, international mobility and the excellence, both academic and of research. Thus, he announced that rejuvenated personnel and up and coming researching groups will continue being among his priorities.
The Rector expressed his concern about the cuts announced by the Central Government and once again stated that the promotion of sponsorship would be one of the axis of his term of office. Likewise, he asked the future Asturian Government for a real agreement with the University to guarantee financial and legal stability.
Gotor offered the same institutional loyalty he has kept all these years, transparency and austerity, although he demanded a greater investement in Reseach, Development and Innovation (I+D+i) "to put the University on a level with the Spanish and European average". He also demanded that the Government "promote entrepeneurship and innovation in the Asturian companies with the objective of boosting their researching activity and assigning more doctors to their staff; and that it supports the development of Research Centres and Institutes which guarantee quality research in excellence areas".
On his part, the President of the Asturian Government referred to Gotor as a person with "long-term visions and with his feet on the ground". Furthermore, he encouraged the University of Oviedo "not to give up" long-term challenges such as the Campus of Excellence.
The Rector was accompanied in the ceremony by the President of the General Assembly of the Principality of Asturias, the government Delegate, the Regional Minister of Education and Universities, the President of TSJA, the President of the Social Council and the Director of The Prince of Asturias Foundation, among other authorities. Also, the exRectors and members of the Rectorate Team who have accompanied Gotor in his first term of office were also present.
