165 high school students from Asturias competed in the Olympiad and Vicente Gotor encouraged them to extend their academic training
The Rector of the University of Oviedo, Vicente Gotor, received this morning the winners of the XXVI edition of the Chemistry Olympiad held last 10 March and in which 165 students from the last year of high school of Asturias took part. Alejandro Uría Álvarez from the Corazón de María High School in Gijón was the winner followed by Ignacio Amores Sesar from La Quintana High School (Ciaño) and Ángel Martínez Canal from the Leopoldo Alas Clarín High School in Oviedo, who achieved the second and third place respectively.
The President of the Chemists Association of the Principality of Asturias, Miguel Ferrero, and the Dean of the Official Association of Chemists of Asturias and León, Javier Santos, together with relatives and professors of the three students awarded were also present in the reception.
Vicente Gotor encouraged the students to extend their academic training and reminded them of the commitment the University of Oviedo has undertaken in order to achieve teaching and research excellence. "In 2009 we were recognised as one of the 9 best Spanish universities and this is a project on which we are still working", emphasized to the students and their relatives. Furthermore, the Rector gave them a gift on behalf of the University, where they will probably enrol next year.
