The sports competition gathers in Asturias until next Saturday almost a thousand students from eleven academic centers from all around Europe
The Higher Technical School of Mining Engineering of the University of Oviedo organizes from today, Thursday, until next Saturday the 40th edition of the Cartel des Mines competition. More than a thousand students of Mining Engineering from all parts of Europe will meet in Oviedo to test themselves in a dozen sports challenges.
The Mayor of Oviedo, Agustín Iglesias Caunedo, the Vice-Rector for Students, Luís Rodríguez Muñiz, and the Director of the Higher School of Mining Engineering, Francisco Blanco, were in charge of welcoming the participants this morning at the square of the Town Hall of Oviedo.
The site of this competition varies each year and the students themselves are in tasked with the organization of the competition. Teams from Schools of Mining Engineering from France, Germany and Spain participate in Cartel des Mines 2013.
The participants will face each other in different modalities, such as chess, athletics, basketball, handball, cross, football, swimming, ping pong, rugby, squash, tennis and volleyball. The tests will take place in the premises of the CAU (University Athletic Center) of the University of Oviedo and different sports centers provided by the Town Hall of Oviedo.
The Cartel des Mines competition tries to emulate the Olympic Games with Schools of Mining Engineering from all across Europe. The idea was born in France in the 1960's and the School of Mining Engineering of Oviedo is one of the founding members.
