The University of Oviedo has anchored the first oceanographic buoy of the Experimental Off Shore Station

It will collect real-time measurement in meteorology, air and water quality, directional currents and waves and aquaculture

The University of Oviedo has anchored the first oceanographic buoy belonging to the Experimental Off Shore Station, a project from the Cluster of Energy, Environment and Climate Change of the Campus of International Excellence.

This buoy has been launched this morning from the New Port of Luanco and dragged to Llumeres coast so that it can be located in a point in the northeast of Peñas Cape, at a depth of 47 metres and an approximate distance of 2, 4 kilometres from the coast.

The launching event was attended by the rector of the University of Oviedo, Vicente Gotor; the vice-rector for the Campus of International Excellence, Mª Paz Suárez Rendueles; the Chairman of Telecable, Javier García Conde; the chief of the marine district of Luanco in the Sea Captaincy of Gijón, Daniel Bernardino and the manager from the Cluster of Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Enrique Jáimez.

After a thorough process of installation and movement, which included the collaboration of the Higher School of Civil Navy of the Campus of Gijón, the buoy was anchored, and late in the afternoon it was already working. The beacon has 15 sensors which are responsible of monitoring meteorological parameters, air and water quality, directional currents and waves. Sensors will measure wind, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and atmospheric pressure, in addition to collecting details about water quality, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, etc... Telecable company collaborates with this project by providing the data transmission service.

The rector stressed that this buoy is one of the first steps to reach technical details that will permit defining the perfect location of the future Experimental Off Shore Station. This remarkable infrastructure has, among its purposes, the development of R&D projects in the field of marine renewable energies, environment and climate studies, which will address, among other issues, wave energy, offshore wind energy and the mitigation of environmental impacts on the marine environment related to climate change.

The manager of the Cluster of Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Enrique Jáimez, pointed out that the future Experimental Station will be provided with floating elements as well as, at least, one supporting element, the CEO (Off Shore Experimentation Column), which will be the place where operations will be controlled. The University is thinking about anchoring a second buoy in the occidental coast of Asturias, specifically in Valdés council.

AXYS WatchMate buoy's design, WMTB 1.8 DM version, allows it use in aggressive environments and its building characteristics support extreme conditions which can take place in the open sea, deep waters or coastal waters. It weighs less than 600 kilograms.
