Spanish Red Cross has been the winner of the "Amparo de Derechos y Libertades" prize, in its first edition. This prize was called by the General Attorney of the Principality in cooperation with the University of Oviedo. The vice president of the entity, Manuela Cabrero, took the award in an event which took place in the Auditorium and which was chaired by the rector, Vicente Gotor, and the General Attorney, Mª Atontonia Fernández Felgueroso.

The General Attorney referred to the "exceptional social and human labour" which the Spanish Red Cross executes and which has led it to this first prize of human rights. The vice-president of the entity, Manuela Cabero, stressed that this award is shared with the Red Cross and the Half Red Moon "all around the world".

"Solidarity is part of our own dignity, we cannot remain indifferent", Cabero added. The Foundation of Gypsy Secretariat presented Red Cross's candidature for the prize, chosen by a jury composed by an equal number of members from the University of Oviedo and the General Attorney of the Principality of Asturias.

The rector finished the ceremony with some words to praise the solidarity of the Spanish Red Cross and its labour to awaken "the civic awareness against injustices". He also reminded that "universities are aware that we do not only train professionals in all the fields of knowledge; we train people and this formative process must be full of social values based on respect, justice, the defence of rights and solidarity". Values which are represented by the Red Cross.

This award is framed in the cooperation agreement between the University of Oviedo and the General Attorney of the Principality of Asturias, in which the University Chair for the Warding of Rights and Freedoms was created.
