Rector's office and Students have agreed on the first steps to improve the implementation of the 'Bologna Process'
The rector has promised the deans and representatives of students that the problems which are affecting some centres will be solved through the splitting of groups and the teaching staff's recruitment.
There will be more teachers for the next course to unfold some groups and reduce the overcrowding that students have denounced in some lessons. This is the main commitment of the rector, Vicente Gotor, to the students and deans of diverse faculties who held a first meeting to find solutions to the problems arisen with the implementation of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Students announced that they will stop the demonstrations since it has started to be "unity between the academic and students in defence of the public university", as one of the students' spokesman declared.
The rector, Vicente Gotor, and the new vice-rector for Students and Employment, Luis Rodríguez had a two-hour meeting with about thirty representative students, which was also attended by the deans of the faculties of Law (Ramón Durán), Economics and Business (Manuel González), Teacher Training and Education (Juan Carlos San Pedro), Psychology (Marcelino Cuesta), Chemistry (José Manuel Fernández Colinas), Philosophy and Letters (Cristina Valdés); the deputy Dean of Biology (María del Carmen Fernández-Carvajal) and the head of the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Gijón (Hilario López). This meeting is the result of the concern expressed the students' representatives and the members of the Student's Assembly regarding the implementation of Bologna Process.
The rector reported that, from the next academic course, there won't be groups with more than 100 students. Vicente Gotor pointed out that the University will make an effort to have more groups and more teachers, and he stressed that teaching will be a priority over other expenses. At the meeting, there wasn't enough time to address the problems of all the faculties so this issue will be continued at the next week's meeting.
The students' representatives were Santiago Fano and Rubén Rosón, who appreciated the position of dialogue and the commitments which were achieved though they will emphasize that there are other pending claims, such as the new regime of permanence that they will try to change in the framework of the University's Social Council.
