The University of Oviedo opens the VI edition of the Summer Science Camps

A group of 120 young students from different parts of Spain will take part in four projects aimed at bringing the world of science closer to students, which have been designed by the Asturian academic institution

The University of Oviedo opened this morning the VI edition of the Summer Science Camps, in the Auditorium of the Historical Building. This year, a total of 120 students from 14 autonomous communities will come to the University of Oviedo in July. Each group of Secondary and Baccalaureate students will be in Asturias for one week developing different activities to approach the world of science. This initiative is developed in the framework of the activities carried out by the Campus of International Excellence and 47 scientists of the University will take part in different fields of knowledge.

The Rector, Vicente Gotor and the head of area of the Research Results Transfer Office, Ana Valdés, were in charge of welcoming the first group of students this morning. The Summer Science Camps are an initiative promoted by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports and the FECYT, with the collaboration of Obra Social "la Caixa". The activities will be carried out in different universities throughout the country, which have been awarded as a Campus of International Excellence.

Of all the national applicants, 931 students chose the Summer Science Camps of the University of Oviedo as their first option. 49 high school and baccalaureate students from Asturias joined this year the program developed by FECYT in the different camps throughout the country.

The Summer Science Camps are aimed at awakening the vocation for science among Spanish young students, providing them with direct contact with research. Each student participates in a scientific project designed by university lecturers in collaboration with High School teachers. Participants will get to know the bases of research work: scientific method, working techniques, and data analysis.

The University of Oviedo joins this initiative with four projects based on scientific approach: the Trending Topic the Earth, a workshop on Scientific Bases of Criminal Investigation, an approach to Electronics: design, build, throw and win! and an activity called the Language of Cells.

The program also includes visits to the historical part of the city of Oviedo, workshops on scientific communication, sports and leisure activities. Once they finish their stay, the students will present the results obtained during their participation in the project.
