The University of Oviedo opens a trimester of auteur film in Oviedo. The academic institution, in collaboration with the Niemeyer Center, offers some of the most recent production that do not reach the Asturian commercial circuits, and sometimes even not a DVD release. The Cultural Center for University Extension LAUDEO will show six movies in April, May and June, and will host meetings with some of their directors. Access will be free until maximum capacity is reached at the Severo Ochoa Classroom (Historical Building).

The movies that conform this program by the Niemeyer Center at the University of Oviedo were produced between 2012 and 2013, and focus on social and political topics approached from different perspectives. Independent cinema, film debuts and even collective efforts by Aki Kaurismäki, Pedro Costa and Víctor Erice complete a program that brings to Oviedo a selection of movies that are being shown at the Niemeyer Center this season.

As a complement, the University of Oviedo will feature the presence of the directors of two of the movies that will be shown in May and June. Víctor Moreno, director, screenwriter and author of the photography of Edificio España, will present the movie on May 30, and will talk afterwards with the audience. Luis López Carrasco will be the other guest director, on June 26, presenting his movie El Futuro.

De Jueves a Domingo is the movie that starts this trimester, tomorrow Friday, April 4, at 20:00 at the Severo Ochoa Classroom in LAUDEO. Awarded with such distinctions as the Tiger Award of the Rotterdam Festival or the Alhambra de Oro, both to the Best Movie, it is the first movie by Chilean director Dominga Sotomayor. It has been called by Milito Torreiro a "subtle exercise in capturing time" and an "evocative and, at times, deeply disturbing", for whom the movie ends forming not just "the neutral narration of a family on vacation, but also two much more important things: the final of the confortable world of infancy and the rite of passage to the more indeterminate, problematic first youth".

Was Bleibt?, April 11. German movie that has been featured in many international festivals, including those of Berlin, Monterrey or Las Palmas. Its director, Hans-Christian Schmid, tries this time with a movie that falls in-between a sober familial drama and a deft psychological study of parental-filial relationships.

Centro histórico, May 2. Collective movie created to promote the European capitality of culture of the Portuguese city of Guimarães in 2012, and which forms a discourse around memory and the working class. The direction and screenplay of the pieces were signed by Pedro Costa, Manoel de Oliveira, Víctor Erice and Aki Kaurismäki.

Edificio España, May 30. Documentary that narrates the integral reform of the Spain Building, the iconic building located at the center of Madrid. Víctor Moreno, director and screenwriter, is in charge of recovering the experiences of the more than 200 workers of different nationalities that participated in the reform.

Asier eta biok (Asier and Me), June 6. Siblings Aitor and Amaia Merino direct this documentary that focuses on the friendship and social consequences of ETA's violence. Aitor focuses on his life and his relation with his best friend since childhood, Asier, to showcase different points of view on the terrorist band. The movie was nominated for 8 categories at the Goya Awards, among them Best Movie, Best Debut and Best Original Screenplay.

El futuro, June 26. First movie by Spanish director Luis López Carrasco that shows the Spain of the early 1980s, after the attempted coup d'etat of February 23 and the socialist victory of 1982. The movie was selected to particpate in the Locarno Festival, in Switzerland, one of the most rigorous and prestigious of the global movie scene.

This program is part of the project The Niemeyer Center at the University of Oviedo, initiated last year with the aim of widening the cultural offer of the city and taking advantage of the movie cycles programmed by the cultural center of Avilés for each trimester. Independent productions, movies by emergent directors, documentaries, among others, are part of an offer whose quality has been certified by Fran Gayo, programmer of the Niemeyer Center and the International Festival of Independent Cinema of Buenos Aires (BAFICI). The University of Oviedo joins a networked project that also has the presence of the Galician Center for Image Arts (CGAI).
