Universities should play a leading role in the dissemination and implementation of possible solutions and alternatives to the environmental issues facing society. The University of Oviedo has accordingly taken up the challenge to minimize its environmental impact and educate the university community regarding sustainable attitudes and habits.
The Campus of International Excellence project has paid particular attention to the sustainable development of the campuses and to achieving greater efficiency in management. Strategic priorities have been established that include several actions:
- Reduce waste generation and improve the recycling system
- Encourage the use of clean energy sources and energy saving
- Encourage and promote the use of renewable energies
- Catalogue, enhance and increase green areas on the campuses
The effort to eliminate pollutant-generating energy systems, replace lighting fixtures with low-consumption alternatives and improve planning in certain communal areas on campuses and in centres has helped to rationalize the consumption of water, gas and electricity.
Recycling is one of the pillars of the University of Oviedo's sustainability policy. Two types of bins have been installed in all its centres to promote the culture of recycling: confidential bins for paper (which only cleaning staff can open) and general recycling bins for paper, glass and plastic.
