Sustainability

  • An Area Direction has been created to coordinate the university policies for sustainability as part of the Office of the Vice-Rector for Campus and Infrastructures
  • The number of wastebins has increased tenfold since 2009. The number of bins for special waste also increased from 0 to 41 since that year.
  • There has been a decrease of five million copies after centralizing the photocopying services in comparison to previous years. There has been an important decrease in the use of paper and ink tonners, and a proven improvement in the management of the waste generated.
  • Substitution of water distribution premises due to obsolecense and highly-pollutant materials with new lines, performed with modern, ecological and regulated materials. This has contributed to the gradual decrease in consumption.
  • Extension of the tasks of sectorization of inner lighting of buildings to adjust the consumption to their real needs, avoiding lighting more than the absolutely necessary zones.
  • Since 2009, the lighting system of 26 building has been automatized and its energy efficiency has been improved in all of the university premises with 214 presence detectors, installed in common zones that are seldom used. 401 new switches have been installed in common zones to rationalize consumption.
  • Change of 3,229 light bulbs for low-consumption ones, with higher life span and less light pollution. The installation of the new light bulbs took place at the West Department building of the Campus of Gijón; at the external lighting of the Campus of Gijón; at the classroom building of the Campus of Mieres; at the Faculty of Economics and Business and the Faculty of Chemistry of the Campus of El Cristo, and all of the building of the Campus of El Milán.
  • Renewal of diverse systems for the rectification of the reactive power and UPS. Several bateries of capacitors have been installed and updated to improve the performance of the electrical services Furthermore, a renewal plan has been established for great UPSes and obsolete and hardly-used equipment has been retired.
  • Establishment of a new transformation center that has led to the reduction of electrical losses due to distribution and to a decrease in the costs of energy, with an optimization of the power required and a decrease in the costs of maintenance and exploitation of the lines and electric installations.
  • Establishment of an Energy Information System in 27 buildings, offering real-time data on the consumption and calculates the energy losses to optimize the resources. The new Installation Control System established in 24 university premises controls and automatizes the production and illumination centrals. In 2009, no building of the University of Ovied had this system, which currently operates in four campuses.
  • The Energy Information System that specifically controls the volume of CO2 emissions generated in the premises controlled. The data of the first semester of 2014 indicates that the University has reduced its emissions in more than 2,500 tons of CO2 since 2012.
  • The diesel oil boiler of the Faculty of Economics and Business has been replaced for a low-temperature gas boiler, with a higher performance and higher consumption efficiency. The diesel oil boiler of the School of Sports Medicine has also been replaced with a high-performance consensation boiler that provides thermo-solar energy for the sanitary hot water.
  • There has been an improvement of the parametrization of the heating systems optimizing the performance of the installations and significantly reducing the consuption of natural gas and electric energy. In the oldest installations, the heating system has been reinforced in the distribution to avoid leaks.
  • The use of alternative energies at the Research Building and the Residence Hall of the Campus of Mieres, where a climatization system in the former and a heating system in the latter work by taking advantage of the heat generated by the water of the mine of Pozo Barredo (whose opening is located inside the campuse itself).
  • A new installation has been opened based on a pellets boiler at the scientific-technical building of Gijón, as well as an installation of solar panels at the newly-opened residence hall in Oviedo and the School of Sports Medicine of the Campus of Los Catalanes.
  • Installation of two new microgeneration units to produce useful heat and electricity in one process at the sports center and the swimming pool of the Campus of Los Catalanes.
  • The measures to save energy have translated into a decrease of €630,000 in the expenditure of gas an electricity since 2013, in comparison to previous years.
  • Opening and promotion of the lane for bicycles at the campuses and installation of bike parking slots at the different university campuses, and installation of electrical outlets for electrical vehicles at the Campus of Gijón.
  • As part of the plan for life-long learning for the administrative and service staff, a course on sustainability and the environment was offered to the community, aimed at the promotion of the contents of this subject.
