The University of Oviedo’s commitment to society covers all spheres and shows a particularly close affinity to the underprivileged. The academic institution’s so-called “Solidarity Space” accordingly acts as the driver of numerous initiatives aimed at complementing strictly academic education with education in the principles of civic values, solidarity and equality.
Under the tutelage of the Outreach Area within the Office of the Vice-Rector for Students, the Solidarity Space is a meeting point for developing initiatives directly related to university social responsibility. One of the most important activities is the volunteer programme carried out in collaboration with different social organizations. Participation in this initiative involves official recognition of credits for participating students.
The University of Oviedo has launched a volunteer work programme in social organizations that provides students with official recognition of credits in their degree courses.
Awareness both on and off the university campuses is another line of action developed within the Solidarity Space. Courses, workshops and exhibitions are organized throughout the year aimed at raising awareness within the university community.
In September 2008, the University of Oviedo was included on the Register of Volunteer Organizations, being chosen to form part of the Volunteer Work Council of the Principality of Asturias, constituted on 27 November 2009.
