Justification of the Degree
The Degree in Philosophy has a long-standing tradition and it is perfectly identified and differentiated in the general framework of the university studies in the Western world. As indicated in the report made by the American Philosophical Association, and in agreement with a view generally shared, the studies in Philosophy are useful to develop very important intellectual capacities for life in general, above the knowledge and skills needed by a particular profession. They also try to encourage a dialectic capacity and an interest for reflection, and the exchange and debate of ideas. Moreover, and in a very distinguishable way, the studies in Philosophy prepare the student for the activities pertaining citizenship. The participation in political and community matters is nowadays often degraded by a lacking formation, which is subject to manipulation and is in danger of being abused by demagogy. A solid philosophical base strenghtens the capacity to participate in the public life in a responsible and intelligent way.
To reinforce this idea, the following lines from the White Book of the Degree in Philosophy are useful: "To summarize, society needs knowledge, so that it, in a deeper sense, becomes a social need that widely surpasses the academic field. In this way, the Degree in Philosophy may contribute in a special way to the new society of knowledge. In fact, it has historically played a key role in teh configuration and organization of a European space created on the bases of such projection as rational critical thinking, freedom of consciouness or the recognition of the dignity and rights of human beings, apart from the genesis and development of modern science and the technology associated with it. Currently, this role has to be renewed and adequated to the characteristics of modern society, without forgetting its comprehensive and critical function both for society and for the individuals that compose it.
Contribution to knowledge
Philosophy constitutes a theoretical reflection on what is real and its meaning, essential for the reflective comprehension of the world and our place in it. It aspires to achieve a methodical intelligibility, centered on the questioning of foundations, and it aims at articulating the different fields of knowledge and contribute, in each case, with the elements needed to critically examine institutions and the practices in which social life is organized.
The vast majority of the students who finish the Degree in Philosophy easily access an employment in the field that has been traditionally and socially associated with these studies, in other words, teaching in Secondary Schools and Baccalaureate. Apart from the opportunities in the fields of cultural management, the public function, foundations, consultancy, civil services and social well-being, mass media and publishing houses or new information technologies, among others, starting some years ago, there has been an increase in the demand of Graduates in Philosophy by enterprises (entrepreneurial organization, management of human resources or social mediation, for example) apparently not directly related to Philosophy, but which do need the so-call "economies of knowledge". The capacity of being able to dialectically analyze and approach situations in which positions are opposed and which cannot be reduced to a unique solution is one of the skills that the Degree in Philosophy may provide and which proves to be essential in these niches of employment.
In the field of the discipline of the Degree: references and connections with related Degrees
The different interdisciplinary connection that characterize the philosophical themes are, without a doubt, deeply related with the Degrees that naturally compose the field of the Humanities (History, Philology, Art History, Fine Arts, Anthropology, etc.). But it is important to mention that there are also connections with other fields, such as Sociology, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Education Sciences, etc.
In the European field: references
All the European countries seem to have understood that, apart from the formation of academic professionals, Philosophy must be considered as a decesive element in the formation of a cultivated European citizen, able of creating a radical orientation for their present. There are Degrees in Philosophy, with different approaches to their contents and methodologies, in all the European countries, although there is a clear identity amongst this diversity. The European Graduates in Philosophy are easily employed, and in the same fields as the Spanish ones, when this is related to the Degree taken. It is common in these countries to opt for a Double Degree in Philosophy and other fields of knowledge.
History of the studies in Philosophy at the University of Oviedo
The studies in Philosophy at the University of Oviedo have a long-standing tradition. In 1939, for the first time, the Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy and Letters is offered. In 1976, the Division of Philosophy and Education Sciences is created, with the three sections of Philosophy, Psychology and Pedagogy. This Division is consolidated as the Faculty of Philosophy, Psychology and Education Sciences in January 1982, keeping the three aforementioned sections. Finally, after the approval of the new Teaching Plans for Studies of Philosophy (1992-93 academic year) with a Bachelor's Degree organized in two cycles, the current Faculty of Philosophy is created in 1994.
Quality of the studies of Philosophy at the University of Oviedo
The Faculty of Philosophy offers a Master's Degree (Social Studies of Science) and the Department of Philosophy offers a PhD Program (Philosophical Problems of Today) with "Mención de Calidad" of the ANECA. Currently, only five PhD Programs in the field have this distinction in Spain.
Geographical position of the Principality of Asturias in relation to the existance of studies of Philosophy in the bordering autonomous communities
The universities of the bordering Autonomous Communities or provinces, or otherwise near to Asturias, do not offer a Degree in Philosophy. This is the case of the community of Cantabria and the provinces of Lugo and Leon, and traditionally a large number of students from these provinces have come to take their studies in Philosophy at this University. This circumstance clearly reinforces the advantage of a Degree in Philosophy at the University of Oviedo.
Termination of the Curriculum
Adaptation to the Undergraduate Degree
During the time when the characteristics of the regulations that, in general terms, will be created by the University of Oviedo are not yet know, and always seeking to avoid that the students may be negatively affected by this process, a procedure for the adaptation to the Degree has been designed, as detailed in the following table:
Bachelor's Degrees that are finished by the establishment of the proposed Undegraduate Degree
The establishment of the Undergraduate Degree in Philosophy of the University of Oviedo means the conclusion of the current studies of the Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy (Resolution of October 28, 1997, BOE 14/11/1997).
