PhD Programme in Synthesis and Chemical Reactivity of the University of Oviedo - Mention of Excellence
PhD Programme in "Synthesis and Chemical Reactivity" aims at educating highly-qualified researchers in the different areas of Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, especially in those related to synthesis, structure and reactivity of all kinds of chemical compounds, both molecular and non-molecular.

Access and Admission
The recommended access profile for the students of this PhD Programme is that of someone who has an official Undergraduate or Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and a Master's Degree related to chemistry and which has allowed the student to acquire the following skills:
- C1. Knowing the structure, bond and properties of coordination and organometallic compounds, as well as knowing how to relate the structure and coordinative capacity of the bonds with the stability of the metallic derivatives.
- C2. Knowing the characteristics of structure, properties and methods of synthesis of solids
- C3. Knowing the advanced techniques of computational chemistry and its usefulness to resolve chemical problems
- C4. Knowing the main techniques of characterization of compounds, chiefly those of the RMN
- C5. Knowing the fundaments of advanced organic chemistry related to chemical synthesis and the mechanisms of reaction. Furthermore, bearing in mind the need to access specialized bibliography, it is highly recommended that the student knows English.
Criteria for Admissions:
Admission will be carried out by the PhD Committee according to the access profile of the applicants. To do this, the Committee will score the candidates based on the following criteria:
- Skills acquired during the Degree from where the student comes and which are related to section 3.1 (100 points).
- Academic record of the Master's Degree that grants access to the Programme (20 points).
- Other academic merits (10 points)
The PhD Programme in Synthesis and Chemical Reactivity contemplates the possibility of admitting part-time researchers of a number of collectives that lack the time needed to control their experiments, although during a longer period of time. In fact, other previous PhD Programmes in which the Department of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry of the University of Oviedo has been involved have had experience with researchers coming from secondary education, and who have managed to complete their PhD Theses in an amount of time barely longer than that employed by full-time students. In summary, this PhD Programme offers the option to researchers of developing their PhD Thesis with part-time dedication, always under a strict control by the PhD Committee, and around 10% of the total places available will be reserved for them.
The PhD Committee will value the need to establish formative complements for students who have not justified fully having the competences mentioned in the access profile. In these cases, and according to the proficiencies lacked, the PhD Committee will indicate teh student the need to take, during their first year of PhD, as formative complements, subjects offered by the University of Oviedo as part of the Master's Degree in Chemistry and Sustainable Development, following these criteria:
- Those who have not acquired the C1 competence will have to take the subject "Chemistry of Coordination and Organometallics"
- Those who have not acquired the C2 competence will have to take the subject "Chemistry of Solid State and Materials"
- Those who have not acquired the C3 competence will have to take the subject "Computational Chemistry"
- Those who have not acquired the C4 competence will have to take the subject "Modern Methods in RMN"
- Those who have not acquired the C5 competence will have to take the subject "Advanced Organic Chemistry"

Description of the Activity: This activity aims at working on the basic competences and working on the general capacities and skills of the PhD students.
It is composed of seminars and the PhD Conferences. The Seminars will approach, among other topics, contents related to the dissemination and communication of research or the quality entry in the working world as specific formation in the topics related with more than one field of research. The PhD Conferences combine conferences, panels and participative sessions, as well as the showcase of "posters" that explain the contents of the theses and the advances of the research that is being conducted by the PhD Students.
A detailed annual scheduled will be composed and made available at the website of the International Center for Postgraduate Studies (http://cei.uniovi.es/postgrado).
The goal is that the PhD students acquire, among others, the following learning results:
- Searching for scientific information online.
- Creating, presenting and publishing scientific information.
- Creating and presenting a patent.
- Knowing the basic principles of enterprise creation and self-employment.
- Exchanging knowledge between PhD students.
- Disseminating their research activity among the enterprises and the whole of the Asturian society.
- Finding professional alternatives to the development of their university research career.
- Highlighting their role as innovator to the enterprise.
This activity is compulsory for all the PhD students of the University of Oviedo, who have to attend for a minimum of 60 hours during their formative period.
Teaching languages will be Spanish and/or English.
Monitoring Procedures: An individualized control of attendance will be performed. When deemed necessary, the performance of the PhD student in these activities will be assessed with an essay or project whose precise specifications will be given to them by the people in charge of said formative activity.
All these controls are part of the document of activities of the PhD student (DAD), which will be regularly revised by the Tutor and the Director of the Thesis, and evaluated by the Academic Committee in charge of the Programme.

- Total Amount of Hours: 40
Description of the Activity: The student will have to participate in, at least, a national or international congress or a short stay in a research center. The minimum duration of this activity will be of 40 hours. This activity aims at working on the CB15 and CB16 competences. In terms of scheduling, full-time students will have to conduct these activities during their second or third year of PhD, while part-time students will have to do them during their third and fourth years.
Monitoring Procedures: Individualized attendance control will be conducted.
If the PhD Student chooses to participate in a congress as a formative activity, they will have to present a summary of the communication they presented at the congress, which will be part of the document of activities of the PhD student (DAD), which is evaluated by the Academic Committee in charge of the Programme.
If they choose a stay as their formative activity, the PhD student will have to present a Summary of the research activity that took place during the stay, which will also be evaluated by the Academic Committee in charge of the Programme.
Mobility Actions: Funding of these activities falls onto the grants, financial aid for mobility, projects and research contracts that may be obtained by the research groups involved. If funding is not available, these activities will be supressed.
