El Programa de Doctorado en Género y Diversidad es interdepartamental e interdisciplinario, y se basa en las epistemologías y metodologías de las humanidades y las ciencias sociales. This PhD Programme has the collaboration of the following institutions: University College Dublin (National University of Ireland, Dublin), University of York, University of Hull, University of Lodz, University of Leeds, University of Auckland (New Zealand), University of Utrecht, CEU University (Budapest), University of Bologna and the Asturian Institute of Women.
This PhD Programme will hold the Mention of Excellence until the 2013-2014 academic year.

Access and Admission
No specific Undergraduate or Master's Degrees are required, although the suitable profile includes previous formation on the field of Gender.
Apart from the access requirements and the admission criteria, this profile includes:
- A decided interest, or a previous experience, in Feminist or Gender Studies
- Having taken at least 30 ECTS in the field of Gender Studies during the Postgraduate Programme.
- Knowledge of English (B1 level minimum)
This profile is that one of a student who has completed the official Master's Degrees in Gender, both national and international, and geared towards research, including the Master's Degree in Gender and Diversity and the Erasmus Mundus Gemma, both of them offered by the University of Oviedo.
Criteria for Admissions:
- Academic record (Undergraduate or Bachellor's Degree and Master's Degree), up to 40 points
- Academic formation in Gender Studies, Women's Studies or Feminism, up to 20 points
- Knowledge of English (B1 level minimum), up to 20 points
- Other merits. Up to 20 points: other Degrees, other languages, international mobilities during the Undergraduate or Master's Degree, experience in the field of Gender, publication, application letter or interview, required in calls when it is deemed necessary, due to a high number of applicants or any other reason. The format of the letter or interview with the aspects to be described by the applicant will be made public. The goal of this process is to assess the capacity for articulation, written or oral, the personal and/or professional motivation to conduct PhD studies in the field of Gender, as well as in the thematic area in which the applicant wished to develop their Thesis, and its adequation to the lines of research of the programme, of the applicant. The interview may be conducted in English, which will also be evaluated.
- In any case, a minimum of 60 points will be required to access the PhD Programme and the Academic Committe will establish the possible formative complements required.
In order to be admitted as a part-time student, the applicant must provide proof of being actively working at the moment of admission by submitting a certification of employment. The selection of admitted students reserves 3 places for part-time students.
The Academic Committe of the PhD Programme will establish, when deemed necessay, for those students who do not meet the specific requirements of the "Access profile", and, in particular, for those who have not taken at least 30 ECTS in the field of Gender Studies during their Master's Degrees, the subjects that will have to be taken by each student, chosen among those offered by the Master's Degrees of the University.
In any case, the following rules apply:
Those who have finished a Master's Degree with a professional profile in the field of Gender Studies (the Master's Degree in Gender and Diversity of the University of Oviedo in its professional modality, or an equivalent one) will have to make, as complementary formation during their first year of PhD, a tutorized research project.
In the case that the student meets the access requirements, but lacks any regulated formation in a Gender Postgraduate, the Academic Committe of the Phd Programme will value the additional required formation and will establish the subjects to be studied by each student, chosen among the offer of the Master's Degree in Gender and Diversity and the Master's Degree Erasmus Mundus in Women's Studies and Gender (GEMMA). They may include, depending on the especialization of each student, suitable complementary subjects, and it will necessarily include the following ones:
- Teoría feminista (6 ECTS, Master's Degree in Gender and Diversity, EM GEMMA)
- Metodologías de la investigación feminista (10 ECTS, Master's Degree in Gender and Diversity, EM GEMMA)
- Historia del pensamiento feminista (4 ECTS, Master's Degree in Gender and Diversity, EM GEMMA)
- Specialised Research Seminar (6 ECTS, EM GEMMA)
The contents, results, formative activities and evaluation systems of each of these subjects will be the ones estipulated by the official teaching guides, available at the website of the University of Oviedo.

Description of the Activity: This activity aims at working on the basic competences and develop the general skills of the PhD students.
It is composed of seminars and the PhD Conferences. The Seminars will approach, among other topics, contents related to the dissemination and communication of research or the quality entry in the working world as specific formation in the topics related with more than one field of research. The PhD Conferences combine conferences, panels and participative sessions, as well as the showcase of "posters" that explain the contents of the theses and the advances of the research that is being conducted by the PhD Students.
A detailed annual scheduled will be composed and made available at the website of the International Center for Postgraduate Studies (http://cei.uniovi.es/postgrado).
The goal is that the PhD students acquire, among others, the following learning results:
- Searching for scientific information online.
- Creating, presenting and publishing scientific information.
- Creating and presenting a patent.
- Knowing the basic principles of enterprise creation and self-employment.
- Exchanging knowledge between PhD students.
- Disseminating their research activity among the enterprises and the whole of the Asturian society.
- Finding professional alternatives to the development of their university research career.
- Highlighting their role as innovator to the enterprise.
This activity is compulsory for all the PhD students of the University of Oviedo, who have to attend for a minimum of 60 hours during their formative period.
Teaching languages will be Spanish and/or English.
Monitoring Procedures: An individualized control of attendance will be performed. The performance of the PhD student in these activities will be assessed with an essay or project whose precise specifications will be given to them by the people in charge of said formative activity. All these controls are part of the document of activities of the PhD student (DAD), which will be regularly revised by the Tutor and the Director of the Thesis, and evaluated by the Academic Committee in charge of the Programme.

Description of the Activity: Two compulsory interventions during the first, second and third year (full-time) or during the first, second, third and fourth years (part-time); students may choose any two years two present their work.
This activity is compulsory for all the students of the PhD Programme, who will have to invest at least 40 hours (two participations) during their PhD: two interventions during the three first years for full-time students, and two during the first four years for part-time students.
It is organized annually during the second semester of the academic year.
These meetings are aimed at the PhD students of the Programmes on Gender, and have the collaboration of selected students from the final module of the Erasmus Mundus GEMMA in Oviedo (who are working on their Master's Thesis, of 30 ECTS, during the fourth module). It is composed of discussion panels on the contents of the theses and on the advances of the researches that are being conducted in the field of Gender.
This activity is aimed at working on the CB11 and CB12 competences.
The following learning results are expected:
- Exchanging information with other PhD students in the field of Gender.
- Comparing in group the application of gender theories and methodologies in both specific and interdisciplinary areas.
- Sharing and defending the work of researchers with the students and the teachers who come from different origins, and checking and disseminating the progress of the specific research of each student.
- The main language used will be English, though Spanish will also be admitted.
A programme with titles, abstracts and the names of the participating PhD students will be made available. The meeting is open to the public and it will be announced on the website of the University, which may bring in collaboration from sources independent to the Programme. Afterwards, each PhD student will write a brief report on their individual learning and the contributions of their research or the resulting modifications, and after it is approved by their director, they will receive a certificate that is archived and becomes part of the document of activities of the PhD student (DAD), which is evaluated by the Academic Committee in charge of the Programme.
Mobility Actions: Starting on 2013-2014, the participation of students of collaborating entities will be encouraged, both in person when they are co-tutored conducting mobility stays, and virtual in other cases, mainly via Skype in the classroom with audiovisual capabilities, as it has already been tested in diverse activities of the current programme.

In order to obtain the International Mention, which should be achieved, in time, by 75% of the students, the student will have to make a research stay of at least three months, equivalent to 375 hours of work in ECTS credits (25 hours per credit and at least 8 per working day across three months), in a foreign higher education institution.
The stays may take place in
- a) One of the collaborating universities that already have an Erasmus agreement (or an international agreement, in the case of Auckland) for the exchange of PhD students (UCD Dublin, Hull, Leeds, Lodz, Auckland, Utrecht, CEU Budapest, Bologna). The student will have to compete for a place in the annual public Erasmus exam offered by the University of Oviedo.
- b) In the rest of the collaborating universities (Columbia, York), after being personally accepted.
- c) In an institution that, after being proposed by the Coordinator of the Programme, signs a specific and individual agreement with the University of Oviedo to co-tutor the student, according to the PhD Regulations (BOPA 25/06/13). The length of the stay for this option will be of 9 months, and afterwards the student will be eligible for a Double Degree.
Timing and duration: The mobility will take place during the second and/or third year of the PhD period for full-time students and during the second to fifth year for part-time students. The minimum stay of 3 months may be completed at once (for full-time students) or during three periods of at least a month, according to the official schedule of the receiving institution and the availability of the tutor and relevant research groups. The director of the Thesis will inform about the request of the stay and its modality. Part-time students and those who cannot engange in long-term mobility are expected to opt more for the second option, even if both types of mobility are available for all the students and in all of the collaborating institutions. Furthermore, the research stay may be extended up to 12 months after a favorable report by the Coordinator of the Programme and the Director of the Thesis.
During a research stay, in any of its variants, each student will be put under the supervision of a teacher who will act as their tutor, and in their case (and particularly for stays of co-tutoring for Double Degrees) co-director of the research, and who will be in charge of counceling, monitoring and, afterwards, reporting the activity of the PhD student. Said tutor will be assigned by the receiving institutions, in agreement with the Coordinator from Oviedo. The PhD student will be incorporated into a prestigious research group on the desired field. The stays that lead to a Double Degree by co-tutoring regulated by the PhD Regulations of the BOPA 25/06/13 are carried out by an individual and particular agreement and must last for at least 9 months.
This activity is compulsory for the students who wish to obtain a Double Degree by co-tutoring with any of the collaborating universities or the International Mention. It is optative for the rest , though it is highly recommended by the PhD Programme.
Monitoring Procedures: Apart from the personalized control of the student by the receiving university according to the procedures established in each case (Erasmus, co-tutoring regime, research stays funded by grants, all of which require previous and later monitoring by the University of Oviedo and reports by the receiving institution), the receiving tutor will always closely follow and report on the progress of the research done by the student. This written report will be sent by the receiving institution to the University of Oviedo and will be part of the document of activities of the PhD student (dad), which is evaluated by the Academic Committee in charge of the Programme.
Mobility Actions: The mobility will take place during the second and/or third PhD year of full-time students and it may extend through the second to fifth years (one stay or several, of at least a month each) of part-time students.
The activity will be structured following the guidelines established by the PhD Regulations of the University of Oviedo (BOPA 25/06/13) for the International Mention and/or co-tutoring of Theses, depending on the case (articles 28 and 29), which set the procedures for choosing a tutor and a director from the receiving university, the integration of the student in the corresponding research group, and the required administrative procedures (enrollment, specific co-tutoring agreement, international reports and defense of the Thesis) and needed in each case.
The student may be able to totally or partially fund the stay via the diverse sources available, which until 2012 were:
- Financial aid for research stay offered in the FPU, FPI, autonomical (FICYT) grants, for students who already have them.
- Grants for co-tutoring by the Campus of International Excellence of the University of Oviedo.
- Specific grants for PhD mobility (MEC, Campus of International Excellence of the University of Oviedo)
- Research Plan of the University of Oviedo
- Funds for R&D projects
- Erasmus agreements
- Grants by national and regional private entities (Banco Santander, Cajastur, among others).

Description of the Activity: Attendance and, if possible, participation with a communication in specialized congresses on the field of study, to present their research and the partial or expected results of the PhD Thesis.
It will begin with the attendance or shared and tutored participation in congresses, with the degree of personal responsibility and the level of the congresses going further up as the research progresses and the student develops their skills.
A minimum of 2 participations in national or international congresses.
These will take place during the second and third years for full-time students and during the second to fifth year for part-time students (although both are recommended to participate more frequently, both sharing the experience and in a personal level).

Learning results: Sharing knowledge and research results with other people in the academic field of Gender and in the corresponding area o areas.
Check the application of theories or methodologies of Gender to research in both specific and cross-curricular academic fields.
Share and defend their research in specialized fields.
This formative activity is not compulsory for students who do not have a specific funding or a PhD grant that covers short stays, or for those whose request has been denied.
Monitoring Procedures: Certificate of attendance/participation signed by the Organizing Committe of the Congress.
The participation of the PhD student in the congress will be part of their document of activities of the PhD student (DAD), which is evaluated by the Academic Committee in charge of the Programme.
Mobility Actions: The student may be able to totally or partially fund the stay via the diverse sources available, which until 2012 were: Financial aid for research stay offered in the FPU, FPI, autonomical (FICYT) grants, for students who already have them; grants for co-tutoring by the Campus of International Excellence of the University of Oviedo; specific grants for PhD mobility (MEC, Campus of International Excellence of the University of Oviedo); research Plan of the University of Oviedo; funds for R&D projects; grants by national and regional private entities (Banco Santander, Cajastur, among others).

Description of the Activity: Preparation of articles/book chpaters to be published in indexed journals or prestigious publishing houses from the academic world.
Academic tutoring is offered for the preparation and publication of academic essays, of which full-time students are expected to send to indexed journals one per year and part-time students two during their third to fifth year, starting on their second and third year respectively, so that at least two quality articles have been published during the PhD period.

Learning results: Mastering of the processes of academic publishing: prepartion, composition, selection of the place of publication, sending to indexed journals, revision, modification and dissemination. Capacity for written communication of the results of the research in the academic world, particularly in journals and publishing houses with contrasted quality. Independence in publication and development of an academic career.
Monitoring Procedures: The publications of the PhD students will be added to the repository of the University and to the annual report, becoming part of the of the document of activities of the PhD student (DAD), which is evaluated by the Academic Committee in charge of the Programme. The quality of the journals and publishing houses (indexing, prestige, dissemination) constitute a reliable indicator of the acquired formation.
