  • PhD Programme in Fundamental & Applied Physics

    General Information

    Presentation: This PhD Programme provides advanced research training in different areas of the Fundamental and Applied Physics field. The research topics proposed are only developed in the Department for Physics, enabling students to choose the most appropriate area of specialization for their objectives. In addition, the programme provides students with communication skills and transfer competencies for the transfer of knowledge.

    Specific requirements (Thesis presentation and defence): In order to present and defend the PhD Thesis, candidates are required to have published at least two texts in scientific journals indexed in JCR.

    THEORETICAL PHYSICS
    • Theory of strings and related extended objects. Their degree of freedom at very high energy and the relationship they may have with two-dimensional topological theories of space-time
    • Statistical mechanics of strings at high temperature and its relationship with Quantum Statistics in the spatial dimension, specially with "Matrix Model"
    • Foundations of Quantum Physics, Bell inequalities, Quantum Theory of information, Philosophy of Science
    • Study of the unification of gravitational interaction with other known interactions via string theory focusing on the study of its non-perturbative definition (M theory), extended objects (D-branes), and dualities (AdS/CFT correspondence, S duality, etc.)
    EXPERIMENTAL HIGH ENERGY PHYSICS

    The team of Experimental High Energy Physics of Oviedo takes part in several international projects concerning particle accelerators:

    • CDF collaboration of Tevaron accelerator at Fermilab in USA
    • CMS collaboration of the LHC accelerator from the European lab CERN
    • DELPHI collaboration of the LEP accelerator from the European lab CERN (Switzerland)

    The group has wide expertise in hadron collider physics (SppS, Tevaron and LHC). Its work covers the scientific and technical aspects of experimental particle physics. The group is active in the field of instrumentation of particle detectors and analysis and scientific exploitation of data provided by colliders.

    CONDENSED MATTER PHYSICS
    • Magnetic properties of nanostructured systems using neutron beam and synchrotron radiation techniques

    APPLIED PHYSICS

    • Magnetic characterization of nanostructured systems ranging from DC to MHz. Magnetic nanostructures: granular magnetic systems, magnetic anisotropy, texture, interaction among particles.
    • Heusler alloys (ribbons, wires and microwires), Magnetic nanomaterials (nanowires, antidots, Functional magnetic properties (magnetotransport, Shape memory, magnetocaloric effect).
    ASTROPHYSICS
    • Cosmologic evolution of extragalactic sources
    • Analysis of anysotropies in the cosmic microwave background (MWFRs)
    • Detection of extragalactic sources of radiation of the cosmic microwave background
    • Study of the galactic and extragalactic sources MWFR masking.
    ATOMIC AND MOLECULAR SPECTROSCOPY

    Analysis of materials with spatial and lateral resolution. We are currently beginning a new research line with laser ablation.
