Luis Rodríguez Muñiz has taken up the post of Vice-rector for Students and Employment

The new vice-rector ensures that there won't be a change of direction and holds his hand out to students.Luis Rodríguez Muñiz has taken officially up this post as Vice-rector for Students and Employment of the University of Oviedo. The Assembly Hall of the Historical Building has been the scenario of this solemn event, chaired by the rector, Vicente Gotor. Rodríguez Muñiz, who has replaced Susana López Ares, has announced that there won't be a change of direction in the Vice-rector's office and he appreciated the collaboration of the heads of department.
After taking possession, the new vice-rector alluded to the difficulties of implementing the Bologna Process: "The problems resulting from a fast growth in such a short time are very common in all the living organisms, as the University is". Rodríguez Muñiz has held his hand out to students and he undertook to listen to them. He affirmed feeling concerned but not alarmed by the recent protests, since –under his point of view- "the University has to be naturally criticized and non-conformist".
Rodríguez Muñiz will access to this new responsibility from a deep knowledge of the work developed in the Vice-rector's office for Students, as since May of 2008, he was the head of the Department of Counselling and Access. This ensures the continuity of the intense activity displayed until now in a critical moment: Close to the entrance tests whose calls are held for the first time this year in early June and July.
Luis Rodríguez Muñiz is graduate and doctor in Mathematics. He received the Extraordinary Doctoral Award in 2003. He is Lecturer in Statistics and Operational research since the same year. He has been doctor for more than year in diverse centres, though he has mainly developed his career in the Campus of Gijón (Polytechnic School of Engineering) and, since last two years, in the Master's degree of Teaching for Secondary and High School in Oviedo. He has also taught some courses for the training of teachers, and he is author of several publications with a strong teaching character as well as being coordinator of numerous Erasmus agreements.
As a researcher, the new vice-rector for Students has been primarily dedicated to Probability and Statistics as imprecise elements and the teaching of Maths. Two stages of research have been recognized from his publications in several journals, indexed in the JCR (Journal Citation Reports). He has also done research stays at the Universities of Cincinnati (USA), Paris IX- Dauphine (France) and Sannio (Italy) and he has participated in abundant international and national congresses. He is member of the Spanish Society of Statistics and Operational Research and of the Royal Society of Spanish Mathematics. In the latter, he takes part in the Committee of Education.
Regarding to the university management, as head of the Department of Counselling and Access belonging to the Vice-rector's office for Studentsa and Employment, he has been in charge of coordinating the relations between University-high School and Vocational Training courses, implementing the University Orientation Days of Asturias (three editions have been carried out) and the coordination of a pre-university counselling programme. He has promoted the adaptation to the European Higher Space of Education Area (EHEA) of the regulations for the recognition of credits, students' assessment, access for older than 40 and 45 to university education, regimes of dedication and change of official university studies and the admission from foreign university studies. He has given over fifty lectures about this process of adaptation. He has likewise coordinated the launch of the new PAU in Asturias and he has led the team that created the first web simulator of PAU's marks in Spain.
