The University pays tribute to Rafael Altamira, cofounder of University Extension

Conference and concert to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the lawyer's death.On the next Thursday, 7th of April, at 19:00h, the auditorium of the University of Oviedo will host the homage events in honour of the professor form Alicante, Rafael Altamira (1866-1951), regarded as the founder of University Extension.
The tribute will consist, firstly, on the conference "Rafael Altamira. Historiography and Spanish nationalism" by Jorge Uría, teacher of the University of Oviedo. Then, Ana Cristina Tolivar and Irina Palazhchenko (vocals and piano) will give a concert in which they will perform the Prelude op.23, nº2 in B flat major and the Prelude op.23, nº4 in D major, both of Sergei Rachmaninov.
This year is the 60th anniversary of Altamira's death as well as the centenary of this appointment, in 1910 as Favourite Son of this hometown, Alicante. Therefore, 2011 has been declared as the International Year of Altamira.
Rafael Altamira obtained the Chair of History of Spanish Law at the University of Oviedo in 1897. As professor at the Asturian University, he defended that education was the remedy for the nation's diseases.
The origin of the University Extension of Oviedo is generally attributed to a professor Altamira's speech which was read at the solemn opening of the academic year 1898-1899 and which was published under the title "Patriotism and University". He was member of the first committee or executive board of the University Extension of Oviedo which prepared the first teaching plan. When his stage in Oviedo was almost finished, he made a trip to America, where he carried a message of fraternity through scientific collaboration in areas related to History of Law and the dissemination of new teaching methods tested here.
