Justification of the Degree
The creation of a professional identity entails the mastery of a high number of capacities, skills and dispositions, and among this last group, that of putting said mastery at the service of a job. We consider that the educational process is carried out from the point of view of respect towards the student and the ethics needed to be able to maintain and develop the natural passion for knowledge and the acquisition of a professional identity. The problem today, when the education and the professionals are geared towards the dynamics of the market, revolves around being able to maintain the passion for the mission that directs the effort and the work, two facts that justify the changes promoted by the European Higher Education Area.
The establishment of the Undergraduate Degree in Biology of the University of Oviedo, whose programming is here presented, implies the transformation of 5-year studies (corresponding to the current Bachelor's Degree in Biology, established at the University of Oviedo 41 years ago), into a 4-year Degree adapted to the EHEA. This event carries drastic changes (Royal Decree 1393/2007, October 29) that affect the teaching contents, the learning methodologies and the formation, as well as the methods for transference of knowledge from of the current system of Bachelor's Degrees, that lead to a more integrated and more dynamic organization: the Undergraduate Degree.
Academic and professional justification of the Degree in Biology
At the University of Oviedo, the Bachelor's Degree in Biology, with limited offer of places since several years ago, represents one of the most attractive options for university education for new students. Despite the demographical drop experienced by Asturias in the last years and other factors derived from the establishment of new educational alternatives like Professional Education, the 180 places offered for enrollment are filled every year, with more than 56% of those students choosing Biology as their first option. This shows the vocational profile of these students. Furthermore, the existing intensifications, especially that of Health Biology, attract students from other centers.
As a professional, the biologist is now opening its field of work in a society that day after day considers its labor more and more necessary. The different facets of the work of the biologist and the professional profiles that the graduates from our Faculties may develop are listed below, so as to make evident the need for a Degree in Biology:
As a professional of research and scientific development in both the basic and applied spheres of the experimental and health sciences, biologists conduct their activities in research centers and R&D departments of enterprises, industries and hospitals. The biologists intervenes decidedly in the progress of science and its social effects: genomics, proteomics, biotechnology, human reproduction and healthcare, animal experimentation, animal and plant diversity, the environment, agriculture, nutrition, among others. They have a solid base in scientific methodology and they are able to plan the decisions to be taken to solve diverse biological problems. They may direct and conduct basic and applied scientific research on how to counteract the effects of different organisms in their different levels of vital action: molecules, cells, tissue, organs, individuals, populations, communities and ecosystems.
As a health professional, through the official formation as a resident internal biologist, they work at a clinical laboratory in the specialities of Biochemistry, Clinical Analysis, Microbiology and Parasitology, Immunology, Radiopharmacy and Pharmacology and Radiophysics. They also act in other fields of human healthcare such as human reproduction, "in vitro" fertility and other techniques of fertility treatments, as well as a genetic counselor. In the so-called tissue engineering, the biologists plays a decesive role as a technician in the "in vitro" cultivation of tissues and structures that may improve or replace vital functions. In the public healthcare, they work in the rural, nutritional and environmental fields, intervening in all of the aspects of risk analysis, from the identification to the management or communication, treatment of plagues, control of vector plague-organisms or reservoirs of diseases, etc. They intervene in the process of gathering, growth and reproduction of poisonous animals, the production of poisons and the creation of antitoxins and other products.
They also act as a professional of the environment, mainly in the fields of territorial planning, conservation and control, management of resources (forest, agricultural, marine, etc.), waste management, evaluation of the impact and restauration of the natural environment. They act as a technician, manager, auditor or consultant in the public function, in enterprises or boards of projects, and they work in the organization and management of protected natural spaces, gardens and museums, and in studies of rural, industrial and urban contamination. Their work also involves the expert recommendation for the sustainability, planning anf rational exploitation of natural resources. They may participate in actions aimed at evaluating, managing, controling, protecting, improving and exploiting ecosystems and natural resources, and in the activities related to the creation and administration of protected natural spaces.
The biologists has been trained to be able to conduct analyses of identification and cuantitative determination of organisms and to execute actions aimed at the genetic growth, production, development and improving of animal and plant species, carried out in laboratories, captivity or semi-captivity.
As a professional of the pharmaceutical, food and chemical industries, the biologists primarily carries out tasks of a great responsibility in the technical areas of production and quality management, being able to work in fields such as fishing production to rural promotion and development. Their formation enables them to conduct genetic, cytologic, parasitologic, microbiologic evaluations, as well as those of natural products and the development of substances with biological activity.
They may also work as a farming professional in the optimization of crops, animals and funghi that are already being regularly exploited or in the search for new sources of exploitable living resources. The genetic improvement of classic methods or the creation of transgenic products, the optimization of the conditions for growth, nutrition and the improvement of the reproductive performance are fields that benefit from the knowledge acquired during the Degree. Other noteworthy fields of work are aquaculture or the breeding of exotic or auctoctonous animals with diverse commercial implications.
The biologist may act as a professional of the information, documentation and dissemination in museums, natural parks, zoos, publishing houses, communication offices, enterprises, scientific foundations, information media, and as a guide or monitor, writer, editor, specialist journalist, promoter, scientific consultant, illustrator or photographer of science, life and the natural environment.
They may also work as a professional of commerce and marketing of products and services related to Biology in all the aforementioned fields, and perform actions of direction or high management in enterprises related to the wide range of professional profiles they have.
Lastly, the biologist may carry out a teaching activity in Secondary, University, Postgraduate and Continuing Professional education, or in areas or subjects related to scientific knowledge in general, or specifically to the sciences of life, being able to perform as a director and manager in teaching centers and a consultant in terms of education for social immersion of the scientific culture and in the values of the environment and biodiversity.
As a result, since Biology is an essential part of the scientific and cultural knowledge of humanity, and in agreement to the White Book of the Degree in Biology (ANECA), the following requirements are met:
- The contributions of Biology favor social development.
- There is a social demand for it.
- Properly-trained biologists are able to enter the labor market in their corresponding scientific field.
- The biologists are accepted and positively valued by the professional sectors.
Co-existance of the changes promoted by the EHEA
The current Bachelor's Degree in Biology of the University of Oviedo must be improved in the aspects of integration of the contents of the subjects taught, so as to achieve a generalist Degree that positively affects the formation of the students.
The acquisition of competences for practical and experimental work, according to the general opinion of the employers, seems to be adequate, although it should be completed with other professionalizing activities.
We conclude that the Bachelors in Biology of the University of Oviedo show a good mastery of the biological techniques, although they need to improve their integrating capacity to facilitate the proper assimilation and use of the knowledge acquired.
The desired profile for the new teaching plan should seek and achieve that the students deepen and make their own the fundamental contents of Biology. This should not be translated as an increase in theoretical teaching, but rather as a change in the teaching philosophy that includes new methods and new attitudes, especially by the teachers. The new plan should be able to maintain and, if possible, improve those aspects that the analysis of the DAFO conducted in our center (2007-2008) showcased as positive.
Termination of the Curriculum
Adaptation to the Undergraduate Degree
During the time when the characteristics of the regulations that, in general terms, will be created by the University of Oviedo are not yet know, and always seeking to avoid that the students may be negatively affected by this process, a procedure for the adaptation to the Degree has been designed, as detailed in the following table:
Bachelor's Degrees that are finished by the establishment of the proposed Undegraduate Degree
The establishment of the Undergraduate Degree in Biology of the University of Oviedo means the conclusion of the current studies of the Bachelor's Degree in Biology (Resolution of May 4, 2000, BOE 31-05-200).
